Hello everyone, Sorry I haven’t kept up with the fycomp blog for like the last three weeks. First I was studying for my comprehensive exam, which took all my time. Then, I took the exam and I was exhausted for a week. It was about that time that I learned that I only passed the literature half of the exam and I will have to retake the rhetoric half next march. This last piece of information caused me to just plain not give a shit for a few days. But now I’m back and I will try to keep up with regular reports.
I feel as if the whole comprehensive exam thing has negatively affected my performance as a teacher. Not a lot, mind you, but to a small degree. For example, I ended up with a backlog of ungraded papers while I was studying for the exam. Since I have my students turn in a short essay (or a revised short essay) every week, a backlog can really get away from me in a hurry. This is disappointing, though it may not be a flaw in the system. I took the test a semester early. When I take it again next semester, I will have only one section to teach and fewer classes to take.
